A group of Pine City Elementary 5th & 6th grade students are embarking on a new opportunity this year as they perform a spring play later this month. “Goldilocks on Trial”, a play by Ed Monk, and performed by special arrangements with Playscripts, Inc. features 24 young actors as some of our most well known fairytale and nursery rhyme characters.
“Our elementary students have traditionally performed in a spring musical every other year,” says Jay Schueller, show director. “But after the performance of Flat Stanley last year, the kids started asking us for more opportunities. With the support of the Pine Dragons PTO and the high school program, we thought it was a great year to test out a play for our elementary students.”
Auditions were held in early February to cast the group of students for this show. There are many 6th grade students returning for their second show alongside some new performers. The show is a comedic take on the familiar tale in which Goldilocks is accused of breaking and entering the home of the Three Bears and is put on trial for her crimes. A variety of witnesses are called and perhaps the truth will come to light. Will Goldilocks be found guilty and sent to prison or is there another explanation for her crimes?
Also part of the directing team is Emily Schueller, a Pine City Alum who had her start in theater as a 6th grade student as well. “My 6th grade show, “Princess Whatsername” in 2014, started my love of the non-traditional characters in theater,” said Emily. “Had I not done that show, I don’t think I would have been ready for my high school theater career to have started the next year. That’s why we are so passionate about providing more opportunities to try theater at a younger age.”
The cast has been working hard for two months on memorizing their lines and preparing for the show. They are ready to invite their friends and family to come out and watch them perform “Goldilocks on Trial”. There will be a single public performance for the play this year at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 22nd. The show will be performed at the Pine City High School Auditorium. Admission is free to all students and adults, though we will collect free will donations to help fund future show opportunities for our elementary program.
