Good Morning,
Today is the 80th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is a big day in history. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the many people that have endured sacrifices on our behalf. THANKS to our Veterans and their families today, and every day. We have the opportunity to do so much thanks to you!! Thanks to our Principals for their planning to have information about the important event in our history being shared with our students.
Our senior high students had their music concert last night. It was a BEAUTIFUL concert that highlighted our extremely talented students and celebrated our opportunity to be together again. Thanks to our music department staff and students for creating the many concert opportunities for us! It is fun to see families and our community coming together to support our students!
The Board of Education met last evening to review applications and appoint a replacement on the school board for the position vacated by Wendy Leibel. We thank the eight applicants for their willingness to serve. After comprehensive review and discussion, the Board appointed Lezlie Sauter to the position. Lezlie is a familiar face in Pine City. She will begin her tenure on the Board on January 10, 2021.
We appreciate your focus on student attendance and follow through with their school work. As we navigate the pandemic, we appreciate having your children present and engaged when they are able to be here. Thanks too, for calling in any absences so our staff can spend their time focusing on other matters. Your help is appreciated.
Have a great week and thanks for sharing your children with us!!

Greetings!
I hope this Eblast finds you well. It is great to be back this week after the Thanksgiving Break.
Thanks to our Elementary School families, staff, and students as we navigated life with no internet yesterday! We appreciate your patience. A huge thanks to Matt Baker and Laura Michels for their leadership in getting us operational again!
We thank our staff and elementary students for their help in reducing our COVID case numbers over the past weeks. We asked all to wear masks to help mitigate the COVID spread and you supported us in that. We have seen a decline in our numbers and will (as promised) pivot from requiring masks to strongly recommending them for all beginning on Monday, December 6th.
We will reinstate the need to wear masks if our positive case numbers grow in the future.
We have no choice but to continue to enforce the Federal mandate for all students in Headstart and for all students who ride school busses to wear masks in those situations.
Please know that there are resources and information available regarding COVID testing:
The Minnesota Department of Health has provided our school district with a supply of free COVID-19 tests for students. The tests are BinaxNOW COVID-19 Antigen Self Test and are a rapid, 15-minute test.
These tests are an OPTIONAL resource and offer a private opportunity for families to rapid test inside of their own homes. Students who are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 may request a take-home test kit from the school with parental consent. All testing is self-administered and should be performed at home.

Hello!
I hope this EBlast finds you rested and ready for the busy month ahead. It seems impossible that December is here. Life is good!!
It is so nice to be back! It is great to have so many of our students and staff back this week. We had many absences prior to the break. It is heartwarming to see classrooms that are fuller, and all the wonderful smiles again. We are grateful to all for all you are doing to keep us in session and healthy!!
Here are a few updates for you:
Alumni Web Page - District 578 is working to acknowledge and highlight our Alumni. We have added a tab to our web page to help all make the “alumni connection.” It is our goal to bring our alumni to our web page to learn about what is happening today in PCPS, and to re-connect them with other alumni. If you are willing to help shape the alumni section of our web page, we invite you to a virtual conversation on December 9, 2021 from 1:00 - 2:00. Please contact Jason Vinaja at jvinaja2@isd578.org if you are willing to join the conversation and offer your ideas and input.
Alumni Page Link
Board Appointment - Thanks to all who graciously completed the application process for our School Board appointment. We had nine applicants. There is a special board meeting on December 6, 2021 at 6:30 in which the Board will nominate, discuss and choose the candidate who will fill the position from January 10, 2022 through January 2023.
Neat Opportunity - A big thanks to Mr. Madsen for his work in creating fun after-school opportunities for our students. He has been running a “Gamers Club” for about 3 years now. The participants share time and gaming strategies after school. It is fun to see our students focusing on things they love!! We appreciate this opportunity for our students to come together to socialize and have fun!
Have a great day and thanks for sharing your children with us!

Hello.
We hope you are well. Thanks for your patience and support as we navigate our increase in illness and COVID-related issues. Thanks for supporting our kids and our staff in the many ways that you do. We have some notes to share:

We are facing challenges due to extensive student and staff absences. We continue to look for options/opportunities and alternatives for our students and staff. We will keep you posted as things continue to develop.
We have some notes to share:
- Cinderella - The Fall Play is going on as scheduled at this point. No performances will include student audiences during the day. The play is open to the public this weekend. COVID restrictions, including some masking, will be shared at each performance. We are proud of our student actors/actresses and crew and thank them for making this a possibility for our community. Tickets are still available at the HS Entry Desk, at the Chamber Office, and at the door.
- Conferences - Our Fall Conferences will be held on the dates scheduled. All K-12 Conferences will be held via Google Meets or telephone. Staff will reach out to schedule those meetings. Please email the staff to schedule a time to talk, if they have not reached out to you. We are trying to maintain as much “normalcy” as possible while keeping as distance as we can. We GREATLY appreciate your patience and understanding.
- Board Vacancy - Board Chair, Wendy Leibel resigned her position at the Board Meeting this Monday. The Board is taking applications for nominations for her position until November 29. The appointment will run through January 2023, when the replacement is voted in to complete her term (which expires in 2025.) More information and the application materials are available on the District website. If you have any questions, please contact a current Board Member or me. (link to website)
- American Education Week - Next week is American Education Week. This is a time that public schools all across America celebrate the fact that we are able for our children to receive a free public education. We have some plans to show our gratitude to our many supporters next week. We will share that information in a separate Eblast later this week.
- THANKS TO Casey's Cash For Classrooms Program and to all of you who are sharing your Reward Points with PCPS. The Elementary Staff was treated to donuts this morning thanks to the points earned. It was a nice way for our staff to feel appreciated as they work to meet our various needs each day. It was a nice way to start the day!!
Thanks Again!

Hello and Happy Friday,
I hope you had a great week.
Our community COVID-19 case counts in our District have significantly spiked this week and are to levels we have not seen since the pandemic started. See Pine County COVID-19 cases for more information. We are also seeing an increased number of illnesses and Covid positive cases among students and staff at the Elementary. With the increase in cases at the Elementary and limited access to substitute teachers, our system is experiencing licensed and non-licensed staff shortages and an elevated concern with the health and safety for all.
Therefore to assist in controlling the spread of Covid-19 related illnesses and to keep our students on campus, the team has met to discuss increasing mitigation strategies for a four-week period effective November 8 through December 3, 2021. We want to have our students in person, so additional mitigation measures are an attempt to lower our positive case numbers and will be reevaluated the week of December 3, 2021.
Starting November 8th, all Elementary, High School, ALC, Vision, and District staff, as well as Elementary students, will be required to wear face masks during this period, despite vaccination status. Because all elementary students will be masked, they will be excluded as close contacts if there is a positive case and will not need to quarantine if there is a positive confirmed case in their classroom.
If our staffing situation doesn’t allow for enough coverage, we may have no choice but to temporarily shift to remote learning. Remote learning is a last resort and families will be given as much notice as possible if this situation happens.
All families are encouraged to think about making plans in case their student’s class/school has to go to remote learning in the future.
Regarding visitors, we are pivoting to increasing the mitigation strategy from visitors wearing masks to discontinuing visitors in the school during the academic day until after December 3, 2021. The visitor pivot will go into effect on November 8th.
All programs that involve our students mixing with the community during the school day (i.e. Veterans Program) are postponed at this time.
Conferences will be conducted as scheduled on November 11 for both schools. Parents are asked to participate via phone or Google Meets. Please watch for an email from your child(ren)’s principal for specific conference details.
Thanks for doing your part to keep our students and staff on campus and healthy.

Hello and Welcome to November!
This promises to be a busy month as we celebrate many different important groups and occasions throughout the month of November.
Today, I would like to focus your attention on our upcoming Veterans Day Celebration. Veterans Day is on November 11th. PCPS are celebrating our heroes on November 15, due to the Senior Citizen Matinee of the play, Cinderella - which will take place on November 11th in the High School Auditorium.
Our students are beginning to work on a tribute to our many heroes; our Veterans, our current enlisted personnel, and our first responders. We welcome all to our program which will be held at 8:30 am on Monday, November 15 in the High School Auditorium.
We ask that all visitors and students attending wear masks, as we will be COVID aware. Grades 2,4,5,6 will be in attendance, along with some high school students. All will have access to the recorded program which will be available after the program. If a parent is coming and would like their child to attend with them, please let your school office know so students are accounted for. It is less than ideal to not have all of our students in attendance, however, due to COVID that is our plan. Next year will be better!!!!
The flyer for the program is attached. Please invite Grandparents, neighbors, and Veterans of all ages. Our purpose is to educate our students and honor our heroes.
We will have a PCPS “Tribute to our Heroes” that our high school students are creating. Our goal is to honor our Veterans, enlisted personnel, and first responders for their service with a video tribute. Please help us to note these people by emailing the following information to Dkringstad@isd578.org before 11-5-21. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Kringstad.
In your email memo line, please indicate “Our Name of Military Member”. Within the content of the email, please include the following:
Thanks again and we look forward to sharing our gratitude with our many heroes!
On a totally different note, please note the upcoming vaccination clinics at PCPS. This is for your information only:
11/17: 12:00-4:30 pm Pine City Elementary – 1st doses for kids and staff
12/3: 9:00-11:00 am Pine City Elementary, 1-4:30 pm Pine City High School – boosters only
12/8: 12:00-4:30 pm Pine City Elementary – 2nd doses for kids and staff

Happy MEA Week,
It is difficult to believe that we are already midway through October. I hope you are able to find some much deserved time to relax and do the things you love over the long weekend.
Notes to share:
1. It’s Great to Be Learning Together - Mr. Schlichting and his Industrial Technology students were inspired by our local businesses as the group of 30 students went on a manufacturing tour this past week. PTCC hosted the event and gave students a tour of their campus along with a rundown of the programs and opportunities they offer. In addition to the PCHS students having the opportunity to tour PTCC, they also toured local businesses - Atscott Manufacturing and MinPack to explore careers in manufacturing and learn about the great things created right here in Pine City! What a great way for our students to see how their learning can impact their future careers!
2. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GIRLS TENNIS TEAM - who will be going to the State Tournament next week. The team will begin competing at noon on Tuesday against the Litchfield Dragons at the Innercity Tennis Facility located at 4005 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55409. We are proud of our team and wish them all the best!
Individuals competed as well to earn a trip to the state tournament that begins on Thursday. Ella Sell took second to advance to the singles portion of the state state tournament. Allison Unverzagt and Addie Sell took third in doubles to just miss advancing. Congratulations to Coach Unverzagt, her staff and the entire team!
3. COVID updates - Thanks for doing all you can to rest, rejuvenate and stay well over the long weekend. We continue to ask daytime visitors to mask, and want to remain on site. Your diligence and support are making a difference! Let’s keep this going!
4. Veterans Day Program - PCPS will be hosting a Veterans Day Program on 11-15-21. We are inviting all Veterans and Enlisted Personnel to be our honored guests. We are asking any children of Veterans or Enlisted Personnel to be a part of the program. Please encourage your students and know that the Principals will formally reach out to them next week. The invitation and more information will be shared next week.
5. HELP NEEDED - We are missing many books, devices and school resources that were sent home during our distance learning last year. As you look around your home this weekend (and always), please return any found items to our building receptionists or teachers. We are working to avoid additional costs and your help in returning the various items is appreciated!!
Thanks for sharing your children with us. It is a great day to be a Dragon!!!
Enjoy the long weekend.
Paula

A big thanks to our wonderful Nutritional Services Staff for the care and wonderful meals they provide for our students each day. The staff, and Director Carrie Staples offer variety, great tasting and nutritional meals and a friendly face for our students each day!
On Wednesday, some PCHS students celebrated School Lunch Week by spending their lunch hour at the elementary school. They served as servers, table clean up crew members, overall helpers and played with the kids on the playground. It was a great day!
Thanks again to Carrie and her staff for making the difference they do each day!
*Help Needed -
* Materials -Please check your closets and under beds for any school materials such as calculators, novels, textbooks, media materials, etc. With distance learning, many resources were sent. We are happy to be in school, however, we really need the missing resources so our students can maximize their learning time. Please return the items to the receptionist at the HS or Elementary schools. Thanks!
Updated Calendar (linked here) - Please note that there had to be some slight changes to the 2021-2022 school calendar. They are in the center/yellow highlighted boxes linked here and shared below, Please note these changes:
*December 22 is an EARLY DISMISSAL (1:00) for students and staff.
*February 18 is listed in the community calendar as a “non school day” - There
IS SCHOOL for students and staff on February 18.
*June 8 is an EARLY DISMISSAL (1:00) for students and staff.

- Chromebooks Again, we want our students to have the resources they need. We ask that you talk with your students about using the cases that they were issued when transporting the Chromebooks. We are grateful that we have them for each student, however, do not have the means to replace them due to accidents and improper care. Thanks for supporting us in engaging your students in our desire to be as responsible as we can!

Hello and Happy New Week!
We had another great week at PCPS. We are finding our routines, practicing safety, and learning is happening in so many ways. A big thanks to all parents and staff members for supporting our students as they focus on growing. It is amazing to enter classrooms, participate in conversations and talk with our students as they are feeling empowered to meet the different challenges they face. “From our struggles comes our self esteem” is one of my favorite quotes. Learning is about information gathering AND problem solving. Thanks for supporting, advising and challenging our students to work through their challenges and “struggles”. They are not only becoming more informed, they are also developing skills that will help them navigate the many situations they will encounter in life. It is inspiring to observe this on so many levels in PCPS.
Please be looking online at your students grades, attendance and other data. Conferences are approaching and our teachers look forward to communicating with you. Please contact our staff if you have questions about things at school.
If your student took the Minnesota Comprehensive Examinations last spring, be sure to review that information and ask your teachers and principals questions if you have them. Here is how to access that information: Assessing Your Child’s MCA Data
Masks - Thanks to all visitors and volunteers for wearing masks when in our schools. As you can see on our website, our numbers are slightly down this week. We will continue to be diligent, as it is great to be together!
We have had some issues with students refusing to wear masks on busses. It is Federal law that all are masked, that is out of our control. Our drivers are incredible. They do a great job of keeping our busses on the roads and delivering our students safely to and from your homes. We need them to focus on transporting our students and not being the “mask police''. Please talk to your children and help them understand “why” they need to wear masks on the busses. We appreciate your help.
Thanks for sharing your children with us each day. You are appreciated and they are amazing.
Have a great week!

There are some COVID updates to share:
Please visit our COVID-19 page on our website for everything you need to know regarding the pandemic, including our Decision Making Framework and Pine County Cases Update.
- Your help is needed:
- PLEASE keep your students home if they are sick or someone in your household is sick. We are LOVING being in person and it is our goal to have that continue!!
- Please be sure to call the attendance clerks regarding absent students and give the reason they are gone. Unknown absences are counted towards our Influenza/Covid-like illness numbers. We rely on our absent data to make important decisions. Our goal is to stay in person and unmasked. PLEASE help us with maintaining accurate absent data.
- The numbers of cases are rising as is evident on our data dashboard. For this reason, we need to make some transitions beginning Thursday, October 7, 2021.
- Meetings, including staff, parents, and community will be held virtually when possible. When that is not possible, safe meeting measures will be employed.
- All visitors and volunteers in the building will be required to wear masks.
- Measures such as increased air flow and more intensive cleaning continue to be implemented to help stop the spread of germs.
Thanks for helping us stay ahead of the spread. Our goal is to remain safely in school and that takes everyone’s cooperation and help.
Thanks and have a great day!

Hello and Happy Homecoming!!
We have had a GREAT week. Our kids have been incredible, our staff have provided great examples and opportunities - our Dragon Pride is evident!!! Thanks to all of those who have attended the many games and activities this (and every) week. Your support for our kids and their leaders matters!
Free and Reduced Applications - Thank you to all who have taken the time to complete the application for lunch. While all students currently receive free meals at school, the information gathered in the application process is also used by many government entities when they award our school district Title and other funds. Please read the explanation of “why” the funds are important to us in the attached brochure and complete the application if you are willing. We appreciate your help with this process.
Before and After Job Posting - We continue to look for individuals who are interested in helping with our “before and after school” enrichment programs. We are anticipating increased enrollment around the holidays and are looking for caring individuals to help. The posting is also available on our website. Please let us know if you have questions.
COVID Update - Please continue to monitor our COVID tab on the website. We will send an update early in the week.
Have a safe weekend and GO DRAGONS!!

It Is A GREAT Week To Be A Dragon!
It is Homecoming Week at Pine City Schools. What a great thing for all!!!
A HUGE thanks to Advisors Kristin Foster and Christine Hong and to the Student Council Members for coordinating activities for the week at all sites. On Monday, our Seniors celebrated “get up and go day” and all other students dressed in class colors. Today, our Seniors wore togas and everyone else wore red, white or blue. Tomorrow is “ Camo Day”. There is a special Elementary School Dragon Pepfest in the morning. It is great to see all of the wonderful Dragon Pride!!! So much to be proud of!! This is a fun place to be and it is great to be together to celebrate the tradition of Homecoming!
We were fortunate to have been able to be together and celebrate the Homecoming Coronation this afternoon. Upperclassmen attended the event and all others had the opportunity to watch it live streamed. A big thanks to Coronation Advisor Sheryl Stearns and Emcee Principal Troy Anderson for their work on the event.
Mrs. Krinke and the PCHS Choir did an incredible job singing the Star Spangled Banner and school songs. Our fall activities leaders updated their classmates and friends on their seasons thus far and what lies ahead. Mr. Allen motivated all as he talked to the students about the new senior class “Club Phoenix” that is dedicated to sharing the great happenings around PCPS. The program ended up with the acknowledgment of the Homecoming Court and crowning of Queen Madisen Berglund and King Kameron Jusczak.

Hello and Happy Friday,
I hope you had a good week. The weather has been beautiful and we are beginning to find our routines. In all my years as an educator and student, this is the most unique start. Establishing routines is always a bit of a challenge, it has been a very different experience as we readjust after our months of different learning models. THANKS to each of you for supporting your children through the many adjustments. This is not easy. Thanks to our staff who are juggling so much. It is wonderful to be together. While it is important to acknowledge the challenges, it is important to focus on the opportunity we have to be together. Life is good!
District Office News - We are excited to welcome Jason Vinaja to the role of District Office Administrative Assistant. If you call or stop in the office, he will be the first to greet you. Jason has been in the District at the VISION program and we are excited to have him in this new role.
Safe Return Updates- Please review the COVID-19 Decision Making Framework and the District’s COVID-19 website if you have questions about how decisions are being made regarding COVID related procedures. It is what we shared last week. Please note the quarantine requirements, as we have some situations where quarantine is necessary.
Our COVID-19 numbers within our schools have been low. Please continue to do what you can to keep our students and staff healthy.
Please remember, students who are absent must have their parents or guardians call the attendance secretary (HS 629-4113 or Elem 629-4200) before 10:00 a.m. indicating the reason for the absence. Unknown absences count towards the District’s Influenza-Like-Illnesses (ILI) which guide the District in COVID-19 mitigation measures; it’s always important to have accurate attendance records.
Testing will not be done on a regular basis, however, we were able to secure some at home tests for students. The distribution and testing procedure will be shared in a separate EBlast when the tests arrive on site. Anyone can order free at-home testing kits through the MN Department of Health Website. You can order tests to have available for future use. Test results are sent privately to you within 48 hours or less.
We have been made aware of the Docket App, which is free and is available to easily view and share your immunization records. This is FYI only: https://docket.care/.
Please remember that the COVID funded hotspots will no longer be funded and will be turned off in the days ahead. Please be making arrangements now. We are compiling a list of resources that you can research for options.
Please know that the teachers are accommodating on campus and off campus learning every day. Our hope is that if a student has to be gone one day or one week - they will have access to the instruction they missed. This is also our best effort to make any potential pivot in our learning plan due to COVID as easy as possible. Thanks for talking to your students. Preparation and ensuring we have the tools and understanding we need now will help with frustration and challenges later.
Inclusion/Diversity Committee - Thanks to those of you who have agreed to serve on our District Inclusion/Diversity Committee. We will meet on October 4. If you are considering serving, please let me know and I can answer any questions you may have.

Student Connections - Some of the High School “Captains and Leaders” spent the first period today with the 4,5,6 graders. They shared a bit about themselves and talked to the students about making good choices and being good to oneself. It was a proud moment for our high schoolers, as it is not easy to speak to a group that large. Our elementary students were incredible as well. It was a great “connecting” experience for all. It is a great day to be a Dragon!!! They will see each other again in two weeks for 2021 Homecoming.
Have a great week!

Good Morning,
I hope you are well. I know this week has seen a few Eblasts, my apologies. I simply want to let you know what is happening. This has been a very fulfilling week. It is great to have our students and staff - in person - establishing routines and being together again!! Life is good!
Some quick updates:
Pine City Schools Online Academy - There are 10 seats remaining for the 7th-12th grade Online Academy (the elementary program is full). Any student who chooses to attend the online program should go to this link: https://sites.google.com/isd578.org/pcps-online-academy/home
to register. Registrations are accepted in the order of application. This is a full semester commitment.
Safe Return Plan - Thanks for all your efforts to encourage your children to be as “germ safe” as possible. Your feedback to the current plan (which is posted on our website under “COVID 19”) has been captured in an updated framework. The draft framework we will use to guide any decisions is narrated and posted on our website under the “COVID 19” tab. The written draft framework is here. The narrated slides of the plan are here. If you have any suggestions or feedback, there is a survey at the end of the written document. Please complete the survey by midnight on Sunday (9/12/21) so the Board has your feedback prior to their meeting on Monday evening.
Diversity/Appreciation Committee - District 578 is creating an advisory committee to help frame discussions about appreciation, understanding each other’s cultures/perspectives and kindness in general. The committee will make recommendations to be followed through at the sites. If you are interested in helping with/participating in that discussion, please email me. Our first meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 4 from 6:00pm - 7:30pm. I anticipate a monthly meeting after that. There are no special requirements for participation. We are simply looking for individuals who can help us further develop a sense of appreciation, perspective and community in our schools. If you have questions or suggestions and can’t commit to the time, please contact me so I can learn from you. Together, we will create an even more inclusive community!!
Fun Fridays - For those of you who are new like me, I have been informed that Fridays are “Dragon Pride Days.” All are encouraged to wear their ‘dragon spirit’ clothing. The overall dress code is relaxed a bit in an effort to get people to participate. GO DRAGONS!!
Planning Ahead - We have asked our teachers to discuss “off campus” or at home learning plans with students. Students miss classes for various reasons and we have learned over the past few years that off campus learning can be a short-term solution. Please ask your children about what their teachers have shared and what those plans look like for each of their classes. District 578 no longer has the COVID funded hotspots to distribute. The support for those will end soon. We simply want to give you a “heads up” so you are prepared in case of illness, inclement weather or other situations that require your student to be online.
Please look around your homes. Many books, calculators, and items were sent home during the pandemic. If you have any items that are no longer needed by your child(ren), please return and we will get them out to other students.
Thanks for sharing your families with us. It is a great day to be a Dragon!
Enjoy and be safe!

Early Learning is a very important component to educating the whole child within a Prek-12 system. As a part of the mission and vision of Pine City Public Schools, we recognize the need to prepare students for the future. The educational journey starts with a solid foundation and access to Early Learning.
To support educating the whole child, a team has been working over the summer to prioritize access to Early Learning to address the current waiting list. Ongoing discussions and planning of a possible Early Learning program expansion have included: possible academic space, furniture, staffing, executive board support and administrative collaboration with our local preschool partners (surrounding preschools and day cares).
As a next step in the planning and decision-making process, we recognize it is critical to involve parent/guardian stakeholders. The survey is to identify anticipated participation in the Pine City Public Schools Early Childhood program if it was to expand. Please note that your response will not enroll your child, it will help us identify if we should continue looking into this option. Click here to take the survey.
The current program model that we are exploring includes: additional section(s) of morning and afternoon preschool slots.
The plan delivery and communication to the School Board regarding stakeholder interest will occur at the upcoming Special Session Board Meeting. Therefore, if you could please complete the questions below by Thursday, July 22 we can ensure your input will be included.
If you indicate an interest we will contact you with the outcome after August 1, 2021.
Sincerely Yours,
Paula Foley

Dear Pine City Parents and Families,
Pine City is experiencing a high community rate of COVID cases. WE WANT TO START SCHOOL IN-PERSON NEXT WEEK and we are asking for our community to help us as we prepare for our Open Houses:
Pine City Schools is finalizing metrics and continues to work with public health officials daily to evaluate trends, case rates, etc. and is ready and willing to make changes to its practices if/when needed. Those metrics will be reflected in the updated plan.
Our updated plan will be shared on our website by the end of the week. Due to Pine City’s current COVID numbers, short-term strategies, which include masking, may be implemented to help mitigate the spread while our cases are high.
We look forward to having your children back in-person! Thank you for helping us navigate this time of uncertainty. It will take a community effort to keep our students and staff healthy and in school.
On behalf of the Board of Education,
Paula

Happy Final Days of August!
I hope you had a terrific week. The “back to school season” is in full swing and there are so many things to celebrate! It has been a great summer to reconnect with people, get outside, and to enjoy the things that we have missed. We have a great deal to be grateful for!
Here is the most recent information we have regarding school opening:
Safe Return to Schools - Our goal is to start school with students as we have planned. The case numbers are on the rise and our shared focus needs to be on identifying ways to keep students on campus in a safe manner:
Please note that our plans are based on the recommendations of the CDC, MDH and Pine County Public Health and Human Services. The Pine City Public Schools Board of Education will make any decision to change the plans based on the recommendations available.
In efforts to have the best possible school year, please assist in talking with your children and helping them understand the “why” behind the need for changes throughout the school year and helping them during these times of uncertainty. If the cases continue to rise, we will review our plans and make changes accordingly. Again, we THANK YOU for doing all you can to help avoid the spread of COVID-19 and offering reassurance and support to your child.
Dragon Zone Enrichment - Our before and after school enrichment program registration is open. Please see our website for details and registration information.
Welcome Back Bash, Open House, and Vaccination Clinic - We look forward to seeing you at the PTO Welcome Back Bash (5:00-7:00) and Open House (4:30-8:00) held at each site on Wednesday, September 1. In addition, Pine County Public Health is hosting a vaccination clinic (4:30-6:45) at the High School for families if they are interested. Registration link for the vaccine clinic is also located on the Pine City School Covid-19 website.
The pandemic has been difficult for all. This is a challenging time to be a parent, student, teacher, and community member in general. There is much uncertainty, many emotional discussions and several things beyond the schools scope of control. Your grit, willingness to work with us to get students on site, and flexibility as information changes are appreciated. We are in this together and we will create the best possible school year for all! We are excited to have our staff back next week and our students on September 7.
Have a great weekend.

- Masks: Our plan as of today is to have K-12 on-campus learning with masks strongly recommended, yet at this point are not required. If masking needs to change, it would most likely be short term to mitigate the spread and would be removed as the numbers of confirmed or suspected cases decreases.
- Learning Model: We plan on returning in-person on September 7. Please refer to the website under the “COVID 19” tab for the most current plan.
- Visitors: With the increasing cases in Pine County, we are still allowing visitors; however, in effort to compromise with allowing visitors and responding to increasing figures, we will require visitors, to any building, to wear masks in hopes this will mitigate spread starting September 7 (first day of school).
- Sports: Currently, the strong recommendation of masking includes sports and activities. As of today, if a student is sick or quarantined, they will not be eligible to participate in their sport or activity.
- Buses: All bus passengers continue to be required to wear a mask based on Federal mandate, which includes school buses.
In efforts to have the best possible school year, please assist in talking with your children and helping them understand the “why” behind the need for changes throughout the school year and helping them during these times of uncertainty. On Monday, June 28, 2021, the Pine City school board met in closed session to review the results of investigations conducted by an independent third party investigator. The investigations found that there were incidents of student to student discrimination and harassment based on race, particularly on social media. The school board denounced any form of hate and racism directed at students based on race. The school board acknowledged that it needed to improve its communication to students and parents regarding the actions it has taken in response to complaints. After the meeting, School Board Chair, Wendy Leibel stated, “Our students and community deserve better than this. We want all people to feel welcome at our schools.” The school district is developing a committee to discuss equity and diversity and is seeking staff members and community members to be a part of it. New Superintendent Paula Foley will be meeting individually with the parents and students to discuss the results of the investigations.

New Superintendent Selected

The Pine City Board of Education announces that Paula M. Foley has accepted the offer to become Pine City's new superintendent effective July 1, 2021. Ms. Foley has previously served as a principal, superintendent, and staff member at the Minnesota Department of Education.
The Board was pleased to have ten applicants for the position, five of whom were interviewed on Saturday, April 24th, with follow-up second interviews of finalists on the evening of April 28th. Because Ms. Foley is anxious to meet the staff and community, pending Covid guidelines, "meet & greet" sessions will be scheduled over the summer and early fall. The Board thanks the strong pool of applicants and all who helped to facilitate the process.
"My promise to the students, staff, parents, and Pine City Community is that I will listen attentively, plan proactively, and continue to build on the great work of bringing stakeholders together to grow all aspects of the Pine City Public Schools."

Dear Pine City students, families, staff and community:
As we shared previously, our district initiated an investigation into an allegation of discrimination that had been posted to the district’s Facebook page. The investigation was conducted independent of the school district and has been completed.
The school board will meet in a closed session on Monday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m. to receive the report. The meeting will be closed due to the discussion of educational data and preliminary consideration of allegations against individuals subject to the board’s authority (pursuant to Minn. Stat. §13D.05 Subd. 2(a) (3) and 2(b)).
Pending the outcome of the investigation and board discussion, the district will apply consequences as warranted and in accordance with district policy and state and federal laws. We will also share publicly the findings from the report as allowable under data privacy laws.
As always, we appreciate your understanding as we work through this process.
Sincerely,
Dr. Curt Tryggestad, superintendent
LVP Mini-Grant
PCHS graduate Linda VanProoien died five years ago in May, leaving money to the school district in her estate. An ongoing committee was formed to guide the use of that resource into projects that were of interest to Ms. VanProoien during her lifetime--education, diversity, environmental issues, art and theatre/museums.
An innovative project funded by the LVP Mini-Grant Fund has recently been completed at the Pine City Area Learning Center under
the direction of Kari Hasz and Tom Kloeckl. In their current site, the ALC students did not have a designated spot to sit down for their lunch or social conversation.
Therefore, using the LVP funds, the students and staff designed and built prototypes for chairs, tables, and picture frames that would be portable and easy-to-store so they could enjoy lunch and exposure to some art work or photography out of their classrooms. This was a long-term project with work that included math, design, and industrial technology skills that will benefit many more classes of ALC students. It is an excellent example of interdisciplinary academic work with a practical outcome that will benefit many people.

Dear Pine City students, families, staff and community:
Earlier this month our district initiated an investigation into an allegation of discrimination that had been posted to the district’s Facebook page. The investigation, being conducted independent of the school district, began on May 7 and will continue until complete. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the district will follow district policy and state and federal law in applying any consequences. We will also share the findings from the report as allowable under data privacy laws.
In addition, we are committed to working together with students, parents, staff and the community to seek ways we can ensure Pine City Schools is a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

A Message to our Community
Dear Pine City students, families, staff and community,
Our goal is to keep you well informed and also to let you know that your child's well-being and safety is our priority. A peaceful student-led walk-out has been advertised to take place on Thursday, May 13 at 2 p.m. near the flagpole at the entrance to Pine City High School. The district supports the right to free speech and freedom of expression and has agreed to allow the event to take place as advertised. Though this is student-organized, and not a school-sponsored event, our most important work is providing safety and creating a culture of belonging for each of our students. Our ultimate responsibility is to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for each of our students. While we expect that some students will join this event, we want you to know that teaching and learning will continue as planned and we will maintain a safe and orderly environment for student learning. For students that are absent from class, we will continue to adhere to normal school attendance and safety rules and guidelines at Pine City High School. Students marked absent or tardy remain responsible for their learning and will be allowed to make-up any missed work (following our normal practice for missed assignments). We have a supervision plan for students choosing to participate.
We have recently learned that individuals and groups from outside of our community also plan to hold a similar event at the same time at the high school. Because the district has the authority to determine the time, place, and manner of public events on its property, and in order to ensure the safety of students and school personnel, non-school persons attending the event will not be allowed to gather near the flagpole at the entrance to the High School. Instead, they will be asked to gather at the school-owned property across the street from the high school. Individuals that choose to enter the main parking lot near the school will be redirected to the designated area. We will be monitoring the event to make sure that it does not disrupt the end of the school day, as this is a high-traffic location during a busy time of day for high school students, elementary school students and parents.
On a related note, we want to remind everyone that students and community members are required to follow school COVID-19 protocols, including masking and social distancing, as is expected on all school property.
Our commitment is to show care for our students while allowing for their voice to be heard. Again, our goal is to keep you well informed and also to let you know that your child's well-being and safety is our priority. We thank all persons in advance for following the gathering expectations.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tryggestad

Our commitment is to show care for our students while allowing for their voice to be heard. Again, our goal is to keep you well informed and also to let you know that your child's well-being and safety is our priority. We thank all persons in advance for following the gathering expectations.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tryggestad

A Message to our Community
Dear Pine City students, families, staff and community,
As you have undoubtedly heard, an allegation of discrimination was posted yesterday to the district’s Facebook page. While the post was taken down due to inappropriate language and personally identifiable information, we continue to be concerned about the allegations made and have hired a third party investigator to look into the specific allegations. The investigation work will begin on Friday, May 7. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the district will follow district policy and state and federal law in applying any consequences. As we noted in our post yesterday, data privacy laws prohibit us from sharing or commenting more on the allegations being investigated.
That being said, we recognize that no statement or comment from the district can heal the hurt many in our community are feeling right now. We continue to review social media comments and calls made from concerned students, parents and staff about their experiences in Pine City Public Schools. We know we must listen with open minds and hearts to truly understand how we all can do better, and that is my promise to you. Our schools are the center of our community and we must all work together to create safe and supportive spaces for all who learn and work in them.
Sincerely,
Dr. Curt Tryggestad, superintendent

Dear Parents and Community Members:
An allegation of discrimination was posted yesterday on the District's Facebook Page. The post was taken down because it included inappropriate language and personally identifiable information related to our students. However, please know that we are taking this report very seriously and are in the process of hiring a third party investigator. Pine City Public Schools does not condone racism, in any form. We are committed to ensuring that all students are treated equally and can attend school in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Our expectations are high and we expect compliance by all students and staff as well as members of the community who interact with our students and staff at school. We encourage any students who are subjected to inappropriate conduct to notify an administrator or staff member to seek assistance in resolving those concerns.
Due to state and federal data privacy laws, we are prohibited from sharing more information about this matter. What we can tell you is that Pine City Public Schools recognizes that events of this nature can be traumatic to our students, staff and community. We, as a school, need to immediately and comprehensively respond to those concerns with understanding and support. Our social workers and counselors are prepared to help those students who may need assistance in processing and expressing their emotions and anger. We will continue to swiftly react to any additional concerns that evolve from this matter, if they should occur.
Respectfully,
Dr. Tryggestad

School Calendar Clarification: Friday, June 4 is a student attendance day
Dear parents and students:
Graduation is scheduled for Friday, June 4. It has come to our attention that the published 2020-21 school calendar uses the same color to highlight graduation day as was used to indicate ”PD/No School for Students” throughout the school year. Our sincere apologies for any confusion this error may have caused. Friday, June 4 is a full attendance day for all students Grades K-11. Our seniors will graduate that evening.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Sincerely,
Dr.Tryggestad

1939-1940 AUDITORIUM CLEANED & POLISHED
When Pine City Elementary stood empty due to the pandemic, five school employees worked on a project to clean and polish the 1939-1940 Auditorium that was built in the Art Deco Style as a WPA Project during the Great Depression. Scott Miller, Cass Luedtke, Rick Skluzacek, Kenny Behrens, and Theresa Behrens cleaned and polished the facility that was once considered the finest auditorium between the metro area and Duluth/Hibbing.
The entry way with ticket booth is particularly historic, because it contains the original terrazzo and wood; the latter was cleaned and polished by the team with linseed oil. They are currently looking for the glass shelves and window of the trophy case so school memorabilia could be stored and viewed there.
Thanks to all who worked on this impressive project!

Connaker Retires

At the December 14th meeting, ISD578 School Board Clerk Wally Connaker called for his last roll call vote before retiring from the school board and was honored by the presentation of a traditional school bell. This presentation recognizes 50 years of Connaker's affiliation with the school district, starting in 1970 as teacher, coach, senior class advisor, activities director, and the last nine as board member. In 2019 he was named as an "All-State Board Member" and has continued his participation in the Minnesota State High School League and Minnesota Rural Education Association.
In addition to school, over the years Wally and his wife, Jane Olson Connaker, have volunteered with church and civic affairs. They raised daughter Christa and now look forward to being able to spend more time with her and family, including two grandsons.
